Written by Nora Roberts under her pseudonym J. D. Robb, The …in Death series is set in New York City at the end of the ‘2050s. Yes, future cops! The series is not only about Eve and Roarke as it regularly features other characters like Captain Ryan Feeney, Detective Delia Peabody, Detective Ian McNab, and Dr. Charlotte Mira.
How to read the In Death/Eve Dallas Series in Order?
Every book in the In Death series works as a standalone story, but the lives of the different characters evolve from one novel to the other.
- Naked in Death – It is 2058, New York City. Technology now completely rules the world. Eve Dallas is a New York police lieutenant hunting for a ruthless killer. In over ten years on the force, she knows her survival depends on her instincts. And she’s going against every warning telling her not to get involved with Roarke, an Irish billionaire-and a suspect…
- Glory in Death – The first victim was found lying on a sidewalk in the rain. The second was murdered in her own apartment building. Eve Dallas had no problem finding connections between the two crimes. Both victims were beautiful and highly successful women.
- Immortal in Death – She was one of the most sought-after women in the world. A top model who would stop at nothing to get what she wanted. And now she was dead, the victim of a brutal murder. Eve Dallas put her life on the line to take the case when suspicion fell on her best friend.
- Rapture in Death – They died with smiles on their faces. Three apparent suicides. Eve Dallas finds the deaths suspicious. And her instincts pay off when autopsies reveal small burns on the brains of the victims. Was it a genetic abnormality or a high-tech method of murder?
- Ceremony in Death – Conducting a top-secret investigation into the death of a fellow police officer has Lieutenant Eve Dallas treading on dangerous ground. She must put professional ethics before personal loyalties. When a dead body is placed outside her home, Eve takes the warning personally.
- Vengeance in Death – He is an expert with the latest technology and haunts the police with cryptic riddles about the crimes he is about to commit-always solved moments too late to save his victims’ lives. Eve Dallas found that the victims had ties to a secret of ten years past-a secret shared by none other than Eve’s new husband, Roarke.
- Holiday in Death – No one likes to be alone during the holidays. For New York’s most posh dating service, Personally Yours, it is the season to bring lonely hearts together. But Eve Dallas, on the trail of a ritualistic serial killer who likes to dress up as Santa Claus, has made a disturbing discovery: all of the victims have been traced to Personally Yours.
- Midnight in Death (short story) – Eve’s name has made a Christmas list, but it’s not for being naughty or nice. It’s for putting a serial killer behind bars. Now the escaped madman has her in his sights. With her husband, Roarke, at her side, Eve must stop the man from exacting his bloody vengeance-or die trying…
- Conspiracy in Death – With the precision of a surgeon, a serial killer preys on the most vulnerable souls. The first victim: a sidewalk sleeper. No bruises, no signs of struggle. Just a laser-perfect, fist-sized hole where his heart had once been. Eve Dallas is assigned to investigate. But in the heat of a cat-and-mouse game with the killer, Dallas’s job is suddenly on the line.
- Loyalty in Death – An unknown bomber is sending Eve Dallas taunting letters promising to wreak mass terror and destruction among the “corrupt masses.” And when his cruel web of deceit and destruction threatens those she cares for most, Eve fights back.

Now Eve Dallas has a high-profile celebrity homicide on her hands.
- Judgment in Death – In an uptown strip joint, a cop is found bludgeoned to death. The weapon’s a baseball bat. The motive’s a mystery. Eve Dallas’s investigation uncovers a private club that’s more than a hot spot. Purgatory’s a last chance for atonement where everyone is judged. Where your ultimate fate depends on your most intimate sins.
- Betrayal in Death – At the luxurious Roarke Palace Hotel, a maid walks into suite 4602 for the nightly turndown. A killer leaves her dead. He’s Sly Yost, a virtuoso of music and murder. A hit man for the elite. Eve Dallas knows him well. But in this case, knowing the killer doesn’t help solve the crime. Because there’s someone else involved. Someone with a more personal motive.
- Interlude in Death (short story) – Sent off-planet to attend a seminar at a large law enforcement conference to be held at a posh resort owned by her husband Roarke, Lieutenant Eve Dallas finds her sojourn interrupted by murder, a case complicated by her personal history with the victim.

- Reunion in Death – At exactly 7:30 p.m., Walter Pettibone arrived home to over a hundred friends and family shouting, “surprise!” It was his birthday. No one at the party knew who she was, but Detective Eve Dallas remembers her all too well…
- Purity in Death – Louie Cogburn had spent three days holed up in his apartment. His pounding headache was getting worse. Finally, when someone knocked at his door, Louie picked up a baseball bat and started swinging… The first cop on the scene fired his stunner twice and Louie died instantly. Detective Eve Dallas has taken over the investigation, but there’s nothing to explain the man’s sudden rage or death.
- Portrait in Death – After a tip from a reporter, Eve Dallas finds the body of a young woman in a Delancey street dumpster. Just hours before, the news station had mysteriously received a portfolio of professional portraits of the woman. The photos seemed to be nothing out of the ordinary for any pretty young woman starting a modeling career. Except that she wasn’t a model. And that these photos were taken after she had been murdered.
- Imitation in Death – Summer, 2059. A man wearing a cape and a top hat approaches a prostitute on a dark, New York City street. Minutes later, the woman is dead. Left at the scene is a letter addressed to Lieutenant Eve Dallas. He signs it, “Jack.” Now Dallas is in pursuit of a murderer who knows as much about the history of serial killers like Jack the Ripper and the Boston Strangler as she does.

But Eve Dallas believes there was more to the killing than jealous rage.
- Visions in Death – On one of the city’s hottest nights, Eve Dallas is sent to Central Park. A victim is found on the rocks, just above the still, dark water of the lake. As more bodies turn up, each with the same defining scars, Eve is frantic for answers.
- Survivor In Death – No affairs. No criminal connections. No DNA. No clues. Eve Dallas may be the best cop in the city, but the Swisher case has her baffled. The family members were murdered in their beds with brutal, military precision. Clearly, Dallas is dealing with pros. The only mistake they made was to overlook the nine-year-old girl cowering in the dark in the kitchen…
- Origin in Death – A pioneer of modern reconstructive and cosmetic surgery, Dr. Wilfred B. Icove, is found dead in his office. Dallas knows the victim was hiding something and suspects that his son-and successor-knows what it is.
- Memory in Death – Eve Dallas is one tough cop. It should take more than a seemingly ordinary middle-aged lady to make her fall apart. But when that lady is Trudy Lombard, all bets are off. But someone else wants her dead.

- Creation in Death – When the body of a young brunette is found in East River Park, artfully positioned and marked by signs of prolonged and painful torture, Eve Dallas is catapulted back to a case nine years earlier. - Secrets in Death – Du Vin isn’t the kind of bar Eve Dallas would usually patronize―nor the kind where a lot of blood gets spilled.
