By Maryse 138 Comments
OH.EM. GEE!!! This has got to be the longest series I have ever had the privilege of creating a reading order guide for. And WOW does it look good. Recommended over and over again by fellow book enthusiasts, I was delighted to find out that J.D. Robb is Nora Roberts (I love her books!).
I kept hearing over and over again how Roarkewas one of THE most AMAZING book heroes ever, and so I finally decided to look these up. I could read to my hearts content and indulge in a world for weeks with this one! Massive amounts of 5-star reviews with almost every book!
“Deanna:I’m sure you have already read this series but J.D.Robb’s In Death series is a wonderful series. Murder, mystery, romance. Each book had me on the edge of my seat following Eve Dallas the tough police detective…JDRobbis Nora Roberts mystery writing pen name. Her “In Death” series is wonderful. It’s about a smart/strong New York homicide detective named Eve Dallas. Great reads!
Leah:hey just wandering if you have read the In death books byJDRobb, I love them and I think you will to. Just a tip make sure you read them in order the first one is Naked in death. 🙂 Enjoy!!!”
Jennifer:I have also read the JD Robb “In Death” series and I can’t wait for the next installment of that!
Maggie:Like you, I am an AVID reader… I was hooked on J.D. Robb’s “In Death” series… Eve Dallas is a homicide detective living in the year 2057, these books are addictive and wonderful.. her irish husband, Roarke is a retired bad guy who is now the richest man in the world…
Smeech:Roarke the mega rich, bad boy smarty pants from J.D. Robb’s In Death series. (sidenote form Maryse –> her 4th favorite hero of all heroes)
About the book #1:
Eve Dallas is a New York police lieutenant using her instincts to hunt for a ruthless killer. And she’s going against every warning telling her not to get involved with Roarke, an Irish billionaire—and a suspect in Eve’s murder investigation. But passion and seduction have rules of their own.
Quick tidbit about the series:
“The In Death series begins in the year 2058 …after an outbreak of warfare a few decades earlier known as the Urban Wars wreaked havoc across the globe and led to widespread destruction and death. After the wars, cities focused on renewal and revitalization…

55 or 56 books. It’s a running story in life of 2 main characters. Reminds me of Law & order futuristic. Absolutely love this series. I will be starting book #51 today

Kimberly, it is about the same heroine, Eve. It works though through so many books because of her job. It makes it a bit like a CSI, Law & Order type thing with romance and other personal things.

I LOVE this series. I’ve been reading it for years. Every time a new book comes out, I rush to get it and simply devour it. Then I wait impatiently for the next one. Eve, Roark and the rest of the recurring characters feel like old friends. And, while some books are better than others in the series, there isn’t a bad one in the bunch.

Wow I love hearing this! Your enthusiasm here, and on my Facebook page over it really has me wanting to dig in. Maybe I can do one of these, and one from my TBR list, and then one of these, and another from my TBR list and so on… It’d take me a year to read ’em that way, but by the time the next one comes out, I’ll be there! 😉

“”“She reminds me of Magdelana.”
He said nothing for a moment, just watched her face, then rising, he walked over to the murder board to study Ava’s.
“Not just the high-class blonde thing,” Eve began.
“No,” he said quietly, “not just.” He thought of Magdelana, the woman he’d once cared for. The woman who’d betrayed him, and on the return trip had done everything in her power to hurt Eve and chip away at their marriage”””
this is a dialogue in d book strangers in death. here roarke refers to some woman named magdelana. who is she ???

I am glad I found your blog. This list is exactly what I have been looking for. Now that I have a computer and no longer work it’s great knowing I can go on the internet and find out the order in which books were written. The Eve and Roarke series is the BEST series I have ever read. Though it can be predictable for me at times, I still can’t turn that page fast enough. J.D Robb has brought these two characters to life for me. Very rare. Only one other author has done that for me. Thank You for taking so much time to make the list. I can see how much you enjoy what you do.

I came across the in death series by accident and only have the last three to read. I am a huge fan of Nora Roberts and she has never disappointed with these or her other books. I cant wait for her to keep adding to it. Very rare can an author have so a long running series and continue to keep you in touch with all of the characters.

If you haven’t read this series…PLEASE DO…it does NOT disappoint. I am almost caught up and at the home stretch. I am upto Fantasy In Death and I must tell you that of ALL the books I have read, of ALL the heroes, of ALL the billionnaires, Doms, military men I have read if I only had ONE that I can totally bring to life and be mine this is a no brainer for me. In a word, my IDEAL MAN IS: ROARKE!!!!! Thank you J.D. Robb. No one else compares for me.
I know that Calculated In Death just came out and I believe she has another novella and another book for 2013. Happy reading fellow Eve & Roarke fans!

Thank you so much for doing this list. I was given a large selection of the In Death serries. I wish now that I’d kept a list of all the ones I’ve read. Love the lead characters, and the way J.D. I love this ‘series’.. One of the few you can read ‘out of order’ and not get totally lost.. may be a few details mentioned from prior books but rarely any ‘crossover’.. example. I am reading Kindred in Death now and it mentions “can’t wait to read the book on the Icove case”.. and yet , the last one I read (the name escapes me) mentioned the viewing party and subsequent after party for the MOVIE of the Icove case based on the book. .. and yet, nothing lost, nothing gained. All in All , I’ve read maybe half and have tried to go in order, but when nothing to read and a “new” title is available (new to me at least), its always worth the read.

It is my understanding that Mel Gibson has bought the movie rights to some of these novels, but as to when we can expect the movies, that is up in the air. Maybe Me. Roberts can give us an insight as to when this is to happen. I have loved her TV movies in Lifetime on some of her N R novels. Thanks for providing the list it is really appreciated.

When I began reading Naked in Death, I got hooked, so I started a campaign to collect all those old books from the In Death series. (Flea Mkts & Used book stores) Now I’m up to #35 and still have about 10 more to read yet. I’ve read then in order and it’s so fun keeping track of Eve , Roarke, Peabody, Mavis, Feeney, etc etc. I don’t know how long Nora will continue this series, but I sure hope it is several more years yet. I am 75 and carry my latest read into restaurants, car trips, air flights, etc., in case I have a long wait. Reading is my favorite pass time (2nd only to line dancing,) and loving it!!!. And Kudos to Nora for all her research and sensitivity! Go Nora go!

I need some honest feed back on this series. My 11 year old daughter was given the first book by her step mother and is now asking permission to read it. I’ve read Nora Robert’s books before and I’m afraid of the age appropriateness of this series. What is your opinion?

Veronica – I’m only five books into the series and to be honest, it’s been quite a while since I read the last one so my memory is a bit hazy, but I recall enough sex that I wouldn’t feel comfortable giving it to my daughter at that age. I can’t remember how much violence is included. I hope you get some other comments from people with more experience with the series than me but couldn’t help but comment. For what it’s worth, I love the series so far — I just think of it as an adult series.

Aerobics, your daughter is still too young for these books. There is too much sex in them for her to read. I recommend finding her some more age appropriate reading and have a good talk with the stepmom.

I can totally understand your worries. I am a teacher and I get very concerned about the movies and things my 6 year old kids are watching at home. Kids are exposed to things way to early these days. I started reading adult fiction at 12 cause by then I read all the children and teenage books in our library and the ones I could find in the shops. I still remember the day when the librarian phoned my mom to ask if I can take out a certain book. It was funny. My mom however taught me to have good judgement and I never misused that trust.
However I will not recommend this specific series to an 11 year old. Besides the sex some of the detail is gory and gruesome and the issues are adult issues. I think she should wait maybe 4 years to mature in order to handle these books. I’m a big JD Robb fan and I wish I could read her books for the first time again. It was just great.
Important thing is to not just say no, but explain your reasons and recommend other more teenage appropriate series’s. When you just take the book away she might be tempted to read it behind your back.
Good luck.
Hugs. xx

I have an ipod that I got from someone else and it has 13 books from J.D. Robb. I was wondering if you would tell me if there is a specific order to them, if they were part of a series, or if they are just a mish-mosh of her different books. Thank you ahead of time for reading and responding to this email. New York to Dallas is the only one that is not “in Death”. The rest are: Celebrity, Indulgence, Fantasy, Innocent, Kindred, Naked, Promises, Eternity, Missing, Strangers, Salvation, and Treachery. If you would please let me know if these are worth reading. Thank you very much! Karey

It’s an awesome series. I discovered it about 3 years ago and I’ve been hooked. Yes, some of the stories are better than others, but they’re all good. Some will make you cry, laugh, be happy and feel justice has been served. They are a mixture of Law and Order, CSI, Castle and Bones with a futuristic twist. I’ve re-read the series multiple times because they are that good! I highly recommend it. You won’t be disappointed. Because at the heart, the series is about survival and most important Love.

Hi,
Just stumbled on your site , looking for the correct order of Eve Dallas.
Still complicated (above 10-15 it always does ;-( ).
I thought I had read them all. Now I can try to order them and read the ones I missed.(there were just posted some 50)
Please If you could include the correct number
(evt the correct reading order) would be a big help.( You did but I’m Lazy!)
Personal comments.
I like stories and TV series with strong women. So Eve Dallas and Anita Blake among others (A.B sometimes boring with the complicated sex scenes but i like her)
TV-serials like Against the Wall/Missing(2012)/Being Erica/ Tru Calling/ In Plain Sight/Unforgettable(wrong choices in men!? whatever)/Fairly Legal/Crossing Jordan show that the people that make the decisions are more interested in brothel series(bachelor/ millionaire/farmer) and i miss out.Still can review them!!
P.S.
I read some comments around appropriatenes for 11(now 12!] yr old girls to read Eve Dallas.
1. start with the first one.
2. If she doesn’t like it or she’s not ready she’ll tell you. She could make a lot worser choices.
3.Reading a well-written novel never does any harm,(it may give you trouble !!-( if she wants to talk about it and the world and attitudes portrayed). Makes you think!
4.If she has enough alternatives she’ll make her own choice.
Sorry. Your site got me talking(;-)

Just want to say I have been reading Nora Roberts/J.D. Robb since I found one of her NR books. Looked up all the rest and ther I went.
I have been an avid reader since I was very young, but 5 years ago I was in an auto accident, that left me unable to comfortably read any book, browsing is not reading.
I received an iPad mini as a gift for Christmas and tried to read from that,
I am thrilled to say I can!
So I looked up “The in Death” series I was behind on, including the hardcovers on my shelf, I ordered all that I have so far missed and along with the trilogy of the Mongomery brothers, I have read and am on my 8th book.
So thankful,. Love your site and will visit it again.
I love series with all the characters evolve. Now what woman wouldn’t want to be in Eve’s shoes? 😉
Great work, and I may just reread Naked in Death as it has been so very long ago.
Thanks so much!
By the way just started New York to Dallas.
Keep up the great work!!!!!

Hi,
Just finished them all, I think? (being sick in bed helped).
I loved the introduction of the roma dancer beate.
It was more an anita blake like setting, and I realise as Dallas she had to stop the Gift. But — (I liked the concept).
I still have the idea I miss some periods in time (that’s i realise a personal problem while only watching all kind of TV-series when I have the whole season). There are so many characters I really have to do some thinking inbetween.

Hi Sara,
It’s like a very large extended family to me. No chance to stand still at her style i go to fast into her stories.
I would have to read them in order from the start. (still confused about the order ;-( )
I’m glad about Robb’s imagination. She writes very well about the (very) young.(Bella ,Roarke’s cousin and the survivor Nickie(i think) .the scene at the medal and later was well expressed!
I’ll keep enjoying them , and with xxk books at home Dallas ranks HIGH.

I have now read all the books and not necessarily in order (Started in the middle and worked up and then back down) Love every book and all the regular characters and can’t wait for the next one. However, Sara, I agree with you that the last two books especially, seemed to be more like a formula. A little disappointing as I just love the books where so many sub plots are going on at the same time. I will keep reading, but hope she returns to her old style.

I’ve always been a Nora Roberts fan, but somehow I couldn’t read the In Death series when they came out in ’95. However in mid 2012 I was reminded that I’d never read a boring Nora Roberts so I’d better start. Luckily for me, I started with the first two, after that I got them out of sequence, but continued collecting them both in Kindle format as well as paperback. I can’t say I’ve noticed a difference in her writing, but I was thinking the other day, what happens when Nora Roberts no longer writes? Will someone buy the copyright to continue them? I LOVE the series, especially the futuristic aspects, so even if you start reading them today, they’re not out of date cos they’re set in 2058+ . My favourite is Survivor in Death and the only one I haven’t read twice is Betrayal in Death. From all I’ve read on this site, I see that I’ve been missing out on the audiobooks. That’s next. Meanwhile, I can’t wait for Concealed in Death. I keep hoping a marernal relative of Eve’s will show up, so she doesn’t feel she came from two bad people.

Thank you for the in-order reading list. I listen to the mp3’s and the novellas are starting to appear in that format. I wasn’t sure where in the series they belong. Now I can listen to them sequentially when I listen to them all again (and again)!!

I have been reading Nora Roberts and JD Robbs’ books for years now. I just love her writing style. Sex scenes get the point across without being too detailed (I have seen more detailing in True Story and television). I do not require all of the details. And another thought is that kids hear more about sex and violence in school and on the school bus at ages younger than 11 years old. Keep the lines of communication open, help them to learn right from wrong.

I’m loving the “In Death” series. IF there are to be any movies, my pick to play Eve would be Pink – a strong, gutsy, kick ass kind of woman. I’m still working on Roarke.

Began reading Nora Roberts in the Harlequin series. Just happened to grab a later JD Robb book when getting on the plane. Fell in love with the book. Then I went back and started the series. Love it and the characters. When I’m waiting for a new book, I go back and read the series over again.. Been through the series 3 times now.

Hoi Maryse,
Just Finished Obsession in Death (48) Still takes me into the night ;-(
Been trying to find other equivalent series.
Joanna Brady from J.A.Jance is one. Also to be read in sequence (14)
(not Walker ! } Alison Reynolds (9) OK. Couldn’t finish Beaumont : will try again after Kay Scarpetta and Sara Peretsky.
FBI Thriller (18) from Catherine Coulter .
Sookie Stackhouse (13) from Charlaine Harris
Anita Blake (22) fromLaurell K.Hamilton
Anna Pigeon (18| from Nevada Barr
a-w from Sue Grafton
I’m now starting Stephanie Plum but it doesn’t get me as much (trying 2 now perhaps has to grow on me ? )
They have all been a lot of fun in a cold winter !

I have read the In Death series several times and it never gets old. I love this series so much that I have had replace my books over the years because they are falling apart lol. I have also gotten a couple of my friends hooked on this set. I just love the dynamics between the characters and I just can’t get them enough of them. I will be holding on to this set for years to come. J D Robb rocks!

After hardcore beginning, you’re in 2061 with Eve Dallas.
1. Perhaps scan 47 & 48 before reading( I couldn’t and didn’t remember some referrals to 2060)
2. Prepare food you’ll be out for 8 -14 hrs(No TV,phone etc.)
3.Just like in my SF time after an Heinlein novel, I am unable to start anything else to read.
I am even considering rereading 1-48, perhaps i should clean the kitchen .
So Your Choice.

I fell in love with this series just after JD Robb (Nora Roberts) started writing them. I started collecting every one I could find in hard cover, the only books I have never given away, and if someone wants to borrow them I make sure they give them right back! Now I have them on my kindle and am finally willing to part with my old friends in hard cover. I sit impatiently waiting for the new books to come out. Everyone knows once I start reading a JD Robb book DON’T BOThER ME!
One of the things I love is each book is stand alone but is best read in order. Even got my adult sons to read them too.
Thank you Maryse for the list I love that you added the novellas, I actually found couple I had missed!

Have read “in death” series four times and am starting them again before
the new release in February. 78 years old, just had total knee replacement so can’t do all normal activities, so what better way to have another excuse to read JD Robb’s books again. 53 books and can read them over and over again, and can guarantee that I will! Glad I came across your list. Thanks

Just want to chime in with a male perspective. I love this series and have collected audio versions (CD) thru “Concealed in Death” and will soon be adding the rest. I got hooked listening to one mid series (Fantasy in Death) and started purchasing the whole series to be able to work from #1 (Naked in Death) thru… whatever. Have listened to the first 45 once and working through a second time (it takes a while).
If you are just getting started at collecting, do remember that most sources list them in a “Romance” category rather than “Crime/Detective Fiction.”
For those of us preferring or needing audio book, Susan Ericksen is a fantastic reader – actually, performer – who brings the character alive, right down to the most minor or incidental ones.

This is by far one the best series of books I have read. I started with the Kibdle books and now have the Audio books. Anxiously await each new book, it’s like Christmas morning with each one. Have recommends this series to all my friends and family. Even have my husband hooked on this series. We love listening to them together. Makes “our time” more special.

To Cindy and any others who, like me, prefer or need to have the books in audio CD’s, here is my source for the series. Audiobookstand.com has the entire series available. As I said in my last comment, I already have a considerable number of them. My only complaint is the lack of uniformity in packaging but that is a fault of the publishers and not audiobookstand.com.

Hello Gilda,
welcome to the club !
I think everyone has that problem.Only a personal way of reacting possible.
1 ‘Reread in the right sequence, did work for me .
2. Look at wikipedia “female detectives” .
Overload, but it shows there is a world out there !!
3. Reread in sequence : Anita Blake/ kay scarpetta / Warshawski / donna leon /charlie fox / j.a.jance :joanna & alison
2& 3 does work for me (after 1) still years to go ! 🙁
Clean the kitchen to get rid of the momentary frustration, and take your pick.
Greetings.Saun

You can read it out of order but I would suggest finding the first one because that tells you how Roark and Eve first met. I first read a couple of the books that A friend gave me then I got enough and was able to read the rest of them in order which I recommend

I discovered the Eve Dallas books in May of 2015. It took me till Nov 2015 to read them all. It felt like I lost a close friend. I was lucky to acquire the recordings of 40 of the books. I listen while working or cooking. I look forward to the future additions.

I started Thankless, and realized that Roarke mentions Nexie(?), a girl Eve had helped when her parents were killed. It made me think I had missed something in Calculated, but that wasn’t it. Then I figured that I needed to read Chaos, since that was the oldest short story I had not read. Come to find out , Chaos was way before Calculated, and now I have to work on Thankless to figure out where I dropped the story ball, as it were. I hate losing out on the story line. Can anyone give me some directions here?

Having recently discovered Nora Roberts and Iris Johansson, I find similarities between Eve Duncan; life and Eve Dallas.
As a male, not particularly interested in romance novels, more the Law and Order type, I was glad to learn of JD Robb, though the “In Death” series is certainly filled with sexual encounters, there’s much more.
I’ve just this minute finished reading “Apprentice”, have now read 7 titles, with a couple dozen or so to go yet,,, which is a bit of a problem. I’m getting them, when available, from the local library “Book Nest” selling previously read books. They offer a BOLO which I’ve added my name to, plus a list of titles I want, prior to Apprentice, now finding out two others need to be added.
I myself am a writer/published poet, and enjoy James Patterson, Koonz, now Johansson, and especially Nora/JD. Beyond that I’m a major fan of Red Heads, and find Nora to be quite attractive.
What I’m now even more curious about is whether or not Eve Dallas is an alter ego for Ms. Roberts, which actually interests me further.
Glad I found your blog.
Regards,
Steven Wolf
